Even though this past week was spring break, it was both incredibly relaxing, maybe too relaxing, to being hectic. Yes I spend some of the days laying on the couch binge watching Netflix and playing with the dog, but other days were not as relaxing. Unfortunately some magical fairy will not come down and tap me on the head with her magic wand and give me my dream job. What is my dream job? I am not sure, and when interviewers ask me where I want to be in five or ten years, instead of telling them to shut up and shoot the question right back at them, I just smile and giggle and tell them I would love to be at this company helping it expand. Which brings me to the topic of interviews...
Through life there has always been a path that the upper class girls were expected to follow, go to high school, go to a good college, but now what?
Some of my friends choose a smart path and choose to go to graduate school, I toyed with that idea for a while, then decided I could not stand to sit in a class room for another few years. So instead, I decided it was time to but my big girl shoes on and go into the real world.
Instead of taking the easy job I've been offered from my internship, I obviously need to make life harder for myself and want to work for a fashion company. The questions of why and when did you decide you want to be in the fashion world are questions I am constantly asked... and the answer is I am not really sure, but I would rather do something I am passionate about for the rest of my life. So I was pushy and sent my resume out to a few companies that I love.
When I say I love the companies I really mean, I love what they have to offer. However, when I say that, I am not kidding. When I sent my resume out, it was to brands that I feel I can embody and represent well. For example, Michael Kors. I remember seeing Michael on Project Runway when it first came out. From then on, I started following his career, I love the way his company has evolved and exploded. I not only love his products, I love how his #WatchHungerStop watch campaign is going to help others. I also enjoy as a consumer, I can feel close to the brand with social media outlets.
I was nervous about what to wear to the interview, especially since it should not be as professional and type-a as an outfit should be for lets say, a finance job interview. The interview outfit should still be clean cut and pulled together, but do not be afraid to add some spice from how you actually dress. Be fun, pulled together, and yourself.
I love wearing all black with a pop of color every now and then. I wore, wine colored cropped pants from J-Crew, to give a polished professional look I added a black blazer but cuffed the sleeves. Now that I covered my basis with the polished professional aspect, I added a bit of my own flare to it as well. I wore my white embellished top, yes it is polished and clean cut, but the embellishments would not fly at any other type of interview, neither would the black booties I wore.
For the jewelry... for my earrings I kept it simple and matched the embellishments and wore diamond studs. No necklace was needed since it would have looked overwhelming. I added on a few gold bangle bracelets, from a mix of places like Alex & Ani as well as things I have picked up from Nordstroms. Typically in the professional world it is frowned upon to wear watches to an interview, but if you are not looking at it and it complements the outfit, then go for it. I happen to have many Michael Kors watches, including the #WatchHungerStop Watch, so why not wear it.
As for the bag you choose to bring with you, that can get tricky. Since this was my first in person meeting with them I wanted to keep it simple, so I decided to just bring a classic black longchamp. Part of the reason I did this was not only to have it be a bit simpler, but also because it fit everything I needed for the day easily inside of it. Not only did I bring extra copies of my resume with me, but I them inside of a Pad Folder. This is perfect to have during an interview, having it open during the interview is a plus so you can take some quick notes down, have your resume in front of you and if they give you anything you can easily store it. Inside of my bag, I also had a water bottle, my headphones and iPad for the train ride and my wallet. Overall it was a great day, I was offered a job, and felt great about myself. Not only that, but I was able to spend a nice day in the city...
