tips to drop a few extra pounds...

thinspiration...
Everyone needs a little extra push to make themselves drop those extra few pounds that don't seem to want to let go. I need to shake those extra winter pounds, thankfully they have been slowly coming off but not as quickly as I would like. Here are some things I do my best to keep in mind to help myself.

goals...
Goals are an important part of life in general. For weight loss specifically, short term and long term goals are necessary. Overall I want to be happy with my body and loose about ten pounds. However I know I'll be frustrated with  myself if I set that goal and don't immediately accomplish it. To prevent frustration I set weekly goals for myself, for instance I want to loose a pound a week.
Everyone can be happy with themselves, and whatever your goals are, do it for yourself. My goal is to drop those pesky winter pounds by the time my trip to Milan approaches. In the mean time, I'll take it all day by day.

motivation...
A little push can go a long way. Keep something in mind that you really want, for instance. One time I bought a bikini and told myself I could wear it when I was happy with the way I looked. Seeing it hanging in my room everyday got me up to go the extra mile. Whatever it is, having a picture of the bag, jewelry, dress, Ryan Gosling hanging up will end up doing wonders.

reward & punishment...
Don't let yourself get discouraged, after a bad day you deserve to indulge yourself. With that in mind, try and control yourself at the same time. If you have had a great week and accomplished your weekly goal, there is no harm in having some of that ice cream or chocolate cake after dinner. Be careful though, don't do that everyday! Try and only do it on the weekends to reward yourself from all the hard work! On the flipside, we all have bad days, no shame in it. Instead of getting even more upset and eating more, or having more to drink or whatever it is. Make a "punishment" jar. In the jar throw a dollar in for every hundred calories your over the budget for the day (or think you are). Trust me, this little trick will work wonders. Not only will you not want to throw the money in the jar in the first place, at the end of the long term goal, you'll have some cash to spare!

ten quick tips...
  1. Take the stairs - This is a quick painless way to burn some extra calories. Instead of taking the escalator or elevator, just walk up the flight of stairs. On top of that instead of getting into the car or cab to go a few blocks away, just walk.
  2. Say no to dessert - You do not need an indulgent dessert every night. In-fact, your last meal of the day should not be a big one. Try and a light and early dinner, and if you have a crazy sweet tooth, try and have the sweet during lunch time.
  3. Swap - Try to swap one thing every day for something with less calories and healthier. For instance, instead of having a donut or bagel in the morning, try having a granola bar or yogurt. Instead of having two cookies at lunch, reach for the apple instead. It really sucks at first, but after a while you don't even realize what you are doing and are naturally reaching for the healthier options.
  4. Eat breakfast - As cheesy as it sounds, breakfast really is the most important part of the day. Having breakfast will jump start your daily metabolism. It will fill you up to help prevent snacking for the rest of the day as well as help you think more clearly in the morning!
  5. Write down everything you eat - When I started doing this I was shocked  at the amount of food I was eating. I realized I was just eating because I was bored, not because I was actually hungry. When I started doing this I started not only eating better, but dropping those extra pounds much more easily.
  6. Spend ten extra minutes at the gym a day - Lets say you go to the gym five days a week. By spending an extra ten minutes a day at the gym, you almost spend another hour each week working out without even realizing it.
  7. Treat yourself - We all need a little pick me up of a snack now and then. Have that chocolate bar, glass of wine or whatever it is you crave.
  8. Hydrate - Drinking a large glass of water before each meal will help fill you up. Hydrating through the day will also help with hunger, on top of that cold water will help boost your metabolism.
  9. You don't HAVE to finish meals in one sitting - Portion control ladies! When eating out, we are served huge portions. Don't be afraid to ask for a doggie bag or save the rest of what you are eating for later. Its like having two meals in one!
  10. Don't starve yourself - Yes if you are trying to loose weight you should eat less, that doesn't mean don't eat anything. You need to eat through the day in order to keep your body going!
Do it for yourself

until next time... xoxo J
